Raising Readers in a Screen-Obsessed World

Once upon a time, “screen time” meant an old classroom projector wheeling to the front of the room. Now, it’s a daily battle fought with tablets, remotes, and desperate cries of, “Just five more minutes!” You want your child to read — but books can’t compete with dancing cats, talking avatars, and unlimited YouTube cartoons. Or can they?

The good news: kids don’t actually hate reading — they just love stimulation. And books can offer that too, if you make them feel alive. It’s not about banning screens; it’s about balancing them. Reading and technology don’t have to be enemies. They can be partners in the noble quest to keep your child’s brain both entertained and engaged.

Try this: create a “reading zone” in your home — a cozy corner with pillows, fairy lights, or even a tent. Make it as appealing as the couch they zone out on with their iPad. Let them decorate it, and only “reading stuff” happens there. You’d be surprised how quickly kids claim it as their secret clubhouse of imagination.

Then, meet them halfway. If they love videos, find interactive storybooks or audiobooks. If they’re into superheroes, grab comic-style readers. The goal isn’t to trick them into reading — it’s to remind them that stories are the original form of entertainment.

Screens will always sparkle brighter, but stories? They last longer. Every book they love adds another layer to who they are — a spark of curiosity, a burst of empathy, a sense of humor that can’t be streamed.
